Course Description

In a collaborative effort to inform and create understanding for mental health providers surrounding LGBTQI clients, this training brings clinicians, direct care staff, and providers together to learn the spectrum of best practices for our clients. Participants will learn terms and basic concepts surrounding gender & sexuality, ways of communicating with compassion & respect, some professional research statistics, and some effects of addiction & trauma.

Clinicians are seeing more LGBTQI individuals seeking help. This is not trend. Today we are seeing more individuals feeling safer in coming out, and we, as behavioral health professionals, need to be knowledgeable and create spaces that are safe, supportive, and provide corrective healing experiences for these individuals.

Learning Objectives

  • Participants will learn some vocabulary & terminology supportive of the LGBTQI community while gaining further understanding on sexual orientation & gender identity being non-binary.

  • Gain information and awareness on the multi-layered ‘coming out’ process for LGBTQI individuals.

  • Able to identify how our current legal system acknowledges gender & sexual orientation, challenges that can take place, and the emotional journey of how this process may impact our clients.
